Phone Link Not Showing Messages? Fixes That Actually Work (2026)
Phone Link not showing messages or texts not syncing? Work through these real fixes in order — permissions, SMS default, re-link — then the durable alternative.
Phone Link Not Showing Messages? Fixes That Actually Work
If Phone Link connects fine but the Messages tab sits there empty — or your old texts show up but new ones never arrive — the fix is almost always a permission Android quietly revoked or an SMS setting on the phone. Work down this list in order; most people are sorted by fix 3 or 4.
Quick version before the detail: on your phone, re-grant SMS permission to Link to Windows, turn off the "pause app if unused" toggle that strips it again, and make sure you have a proper default SMS app set. That trio fixes the large majority of "Phone Link not showing messages" cases.
First, what kind of "not showing" is this?
Three different failures get described the same way, and they have different fixes:
- No messages at all — the Messages tab is blank. Usually a lost SMS permission.
- Old texts show, new ones don't sync — sync stalled or the app went to sleep in the background.
- You can read but can't send — a default-SMS-app or RCS problem, not a sync one.
Keep which one you have in mind as you go — I'll flag which fix targets which.
Fix 1: Re-grant SMS permission to Link to Windows
This is the number-one cause of a blank Messages tab. Android revokes permissions from apps it thinks you don't use, and since you never actually open Link to Windows on the phone, it's a prime target.
- On the phone: Settings → Apps → Link to Windows → Permissions.
- Confirm SMS and Contacts are set to Allowed. Turn them on if they're not.
- Back in Phone Link on the PC, open the Messages tab and re-accept any prompt it shows.
Fixes: no messages at all.
Fix 2: Turn off "pause app if unused" (or it comes back)
Even after Fix 1, Android will strip that permission again in a few days unless you stop it.
- On the phone: Settings → Apps → Link to Windows.
- Find "Pause app activity if unused" (some phones call it "Remove permissions if app is unused") and switch it off.
If your texts vanish every few days on a schedule, this toggle is why. This is the single most-missed setting in the whole list.
Fix 3: Check your default SMS app
Phone Link reads texts through whatever app is your default for SMS. If there's no default set — or you recently switched messaging apps — sync breaks.
- On the phone: Settings → Apps → Default apps → SMS app.
- Set it to a real messaging app (Google Messages, Samsung Messages, etc.), not a stub.
- Open Phone Link again and give it a minute to resync.
Fixes: can't send, or messages partly showing.
Fix 4: Let the app wake up and resync
If old texts show but new ones don't, the companion app went to sleep in the background.
- On the phone, open the Link to Windows app once by hand — that forces a reconnect.
- On the PC, close Phone Link completely and reopen it.
- Send yourself a test text from another phone and watch whether it lands.
On Samsung and Xiaomi especially, aggressive battery management puts the app to sleep, and a sleeping app can't sync. If this keeps happening, add Link to Windows to your phone's never-sleep / unrestricted-battery list.
Fix 5: Toggle the connection off and on
Sometimes the pipe itself is stale.
- In Phone Link: Settings → My devices → your phone → disconnect.
- Reconnect, and re-accept the prompts that appear on the phone.
Fix 6: Update both apps
Phone Link's message sync breaks after updates and gets patched by them, regularly.
- Update Phone Link in the Microsoft Store on the PC.
- Update Link to Windows in the Play Store on the phone.
- Install any pending Windows updates.
Fix 7: Clear data and re-link (the reset)
The scorched-earth option, 10 minutes, resolves what the rest didn't:
- On the phone: Settings → Apps → Link to Windows → Storage → Clear data, then sign out.
- In Phone Link on the PC: Settings → My devices → remove the phone.
- Set the whole thing up again from scratch and re-grant every permission it asks for.
A note on RCS and group texts
One honest limitation people burn hours on: Phone Link's handling of RCS chats and group messages has always been patchy. If your one-to-one SMS syncs but group chats or RCS threads don't, that's a known gap, not something you broke — and no amount of re-linking fully fixes it.
If you're tired of re-granting permissions
Be honest with yourself about how many times you've run this list. Phone Link's message sync leans on a chain — Android permission, background app, default SMS app, a live connection — and any weak link empties the tab. That's why the same "not showing messages" problem keeps coming back.
ComputerCaller (our product) does the same job — reading and sending SMS from your computer, on your own number — but it's built around a companion app on your Android phone that stays connected over the internet and reconnects itself. You sign in with the same account on the phone and in any browser, and your texts show up in a tab. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebooks, and you can save reusable templates for the messages you send constantly. It's Android-only — try it and see whether life without empty-inbox troubleshooting is worth it.
And if Fix 1 got your texts flowing again — genuinely great. Bookmark this for the next time Android eats the permission.
